A Short & Relaxing Hike to Hong Kong Sharp Island

Are you looking for a hiking trail to hike that is not too difficult and only requires a short amount of hiking time during this hot summer season in Hong Kong? Well then, Sharp Island is probably the right place to hike as it only takes about 75 minutes to 2 hours of your time to hike. You will also be rewarded with some fantastic scenery and historical volcanic rocks formation around the island.

SHORT INFO ABOUT SHARP ISLAND

Sharp Island is in Sai Kung. This island has been around for 140 million years. It is a perfect place to discover some unique stones and rocks formation from the volcanic eruption that occurred many years ago when Hong Kong used to have active volcanoes until its last outbreak. The island will somehow make you realise that there are indeed a lot of treasures that you haven't discover in Hong Kong yet. Hiking to Sharp Island is not hard, honestly. The view is spectacular and it is an excellent way to spend your free day in a pleasant and not so intense hike.

HOW TO GET TO SHARP ISLAND

FROM CITY TO SAI KUNG

The easiest way is to take a train to Choi Hung Station, and from there you can take a minibus to Sai Kung Pier. Another way to get to Sai Kung is by taking a red minibus from Mongkok, or you may take a bus (No. 92) from Diamond Hill to Sai Kung.

SAI KUNG PIER

As soon as you reach Sai Kung Pier, you should probably grab something to eat first if you haven't had your breakfast or lunch and also drop by a convenience store to buy some water and snacks. After that, you can start to find a small ferry, also known as "Kaito" that will bring you to the island. Be sure to ask at least 2-3 different boat agency to double check the prices and also to make sure that you are not being overcharged. The price range starts typically from HK$20-40 for a roundtrip ferry ride (about 15 minutes ride each way) per person. The ferry service generally ends by 5:00 pm, so be sure to catch the last ferry before the last service. Be sure to keep your tickets safe as you will need to present your tickets to the ferry driver; otherwise, you will be forced to buy a new ticket.

STARTING POINT - HAP MUN BAY OR KIU TSUI BEACH

There are two ways to start your hike to Sharp Island - via Hap Mun Bay or Kiu Tsui Beach.

HAP MUN BAY - The beach is unique and clean. If you have extra time to spare, you can swim around the area first before starting your hike, or you can also do it after the hike on the other side. Just follow the routes and directions to get to Sharp Island and end your walk at Kiu Tsui Beach. Refreshment kiosks, first aid, public toilets, shower and a changing room are available around the beach.

KIU TSUI BEACH (DURING LOW TIDE SEASON) - Starting at Kiu Tsui Beach is probably easier and shorter as it will only take 40 minutes to 1 hour to get to the end point of Sharp Island, but you may continue your journey if you chose to go further to Hap Mun Bay. Refreshment kiosks, first aid, public toilets, shower and a changing room are available around the beach.

HOW LONG WILL THE HIKE TAKE

The short hike will approximately take around 75 minutes to 2 hours, depending on your speed and tracks and photo taking.

Since the hike is super short, there is no need to stress yourself whether or not you can do it. The short walk is not difficult to do, so even when you don't have any hiking experience or if you are a frequent hiker, this short hike should be a perfect fit to reward yourself with some beautiful view and to also witness some unique rock formations. Just make sure to keep yourself hydrated, especially during the uber smoking hot weather.

WHAT ARE THERE TO SEE IN SHARP ISLAND

Some spectacular and unique rocks and stones formation

Some spectacular and unique rocks and stones formation

If you are lucky to catch the low tide period that connects Kiu Tsui Beach to Sharp Island, then make sure to ready your camera out as you are about to cross through the rocks. As you are strolling, take a look around the different types and unique formation of rocks and stones on your surroundings. There you will also witness the famous "Pineapple Bun" rocks. Another thing, be sure to come back before the tide comes in high and to also check the tidal waves news via Hong Kong Observatory for tidal information.

THE "PINEAPPLE BUN" ROCKS

Anyone up for some "Pineapple Bun" ?

Anyone up for some "Pineapple Bun" ?

Yes, that's right! Some of the rocks around the island are form into a "Pineapple Bun" shape. In case some of you may not know this, but "Pineapple Bun" is a famous bread in Hong Kong. It is many locals, and even tourists favourite pastry and some of them may even eat it every day. When I saw these unique rocks, I start thinking that maybe the bakers were inspired by these rock formations and that is why "Pineapple Bun" is created, or it could be just mere coincidence that mother nature and human brains work and think alike.

WHAT ARE THERE TO DO IN SHARP ISLAND

FISHING

This place is probably a perfect spot to hunt for some fishes. I have seen quite a lot of people doing some fishy business around the island, so this place must be one of the 'IT" place for fishing.

KAYAKING

There is a kiosk around the beach where you can rent a kayak boat and with paddles, of course. I have seen some people kayaking far from the beach, but of course, those are only for experienced kayakers.

SWIMMING & SNORKELING

Sharp Island is still a beach, so swimming and snorkelling are allowed there. Be sure to wear a life jacket if you are not stable at swimming.

SCUBA DIVING

Sharp Island is a right spot for some scuba diving. I have seen a few divers during my visit to the island. So if you are up for some under the sea scavenging mission, then you should check out Sharp Island.

WHAT TO BRING TO SHARP ISLAND

Since Sharp Island is a short hike, it is not necessary to bring a lot of things. Here is a list of things that are essential and realistic to bring.

  • Towels (Small towel - for sweats, bath towel - for shower)

  • Toiletries (Tissue, wet tissue, soap, etc)

  • OFF spray or any mosquito repellent (Trust me there are a lot of flying insects there)

  • Sunglasses and a cap for sun protection

  • Sunscreen lotion

  • Extra clothing (for changing after the hike or if you sweat a lot)

  • Water (1 Litre should be more than enough)

  • Umbrella (In case of sudden rain and unpredictable weather)

  • Flip-flops (To rest your feet from the hike)

  • Little snacks or you can always visit the tuck shop for some small bites at the beach

I hope that the above information can help you in planning your short trip to Sharp Island. This island may be small but it is interesting, something new to discover and something to put in your travel tick list. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask me. I will be more than happy to help :)

9 Ways To Get Organised

Have you ever felt disorganised lately? Have you thought that maybe you should start to be more organised to get things done easier and efficiently? Have you ever wonder when and how to start? Here are some ultimate tips for you to have an idea of how to be organised.

Before that, I want to share something first. In case, some of you might wonder why I created a blog like this. Well, the simple answer would be because I am a very meticulously organised person and I like to have everything - small or major things organised as I hate being messy and not being able to find my things whenever I want to. It is also because I dislike getting late for work or gathering simply because I can't find that one or two particular things.  So I decided to create this blog, hoping I can be able to help people who want to be more organised but don't know how and what to organise. The tips below are in no particular order. You may follow my suggestions, or you may also do a DIY according to your style or convenience.

TIP #1 - SORT OUT YOUR FILES IN YOUR LAPTOP OR COMPUTER

I am pretty sure that no one wants to see a complicated and messy looking desktop screen in your laptops or computers, but I know quite a ton of people who probably have this problem. It would be nice to spare some time for at least an hour to sort out your files. Make sure to separate your data into different categories. For example, sort out your Movies, TV series, Documents, Music, Personal records, Work or school stuff and other stuff you may want to add into separate folders. How to do that? Here's a sample in the picture below.

Left picture - Sample of how to sort out your files in your laptop/ computer.Right picture - Sample of how to sort out your Movies or TV series files when you have too much of it.

Left picture - Sample of how to sort out your files in your laptop/ computer.

Right picture - Sample of how to sort out your Movies or TV series files when you have too much of it.

Another tip, I update my files every 2 weeks and I also back up all of my files into a hard disk.

TIP #2 - LABEL YOUR STUFF

You should consider putting labels onto your stuff to make it easier for you to find things. This method is highly recommended when you keep a lot of boxes, plastic containers or mini drawers.

There are three ways on how to make labels. You may buy a label machine from the stationery shops. Then, you type down your name, then click the print button, a piece of sticker will come out. Cut and stick the label to your designated container. Another way is to use your laptop to create a file by using " Microsoft Word". Then, type your name, and then you may print them out using sticker papers or an A4 size paper to stick it to your containers using glue or cellotape.

I label majority of my stuff. I find it easier to find my belongings, to be honest.

TIP #3 - GET A PLANNER

Keeping a planner, in my opinion, is extremely useful. Not only it helps you to be more organised but also to help you keep track of the essential things. Keeping a planner is highly recommended, especially for people who have a hectic schedule and precise tasks that need to be done with specific deadlines. You will be surprised at what and how much you have accomplished when you look back at your planner. Always find a time to work on your planner. You can spend less than 15 minutes to sort out your weekly plan; 15 minutes is not a lot of time. No more excuses!

I find it so helpful using a planner. I write down everything that I need to do, and I make sure I do the tasks that I have written down. I don't feel like I am missing out on anything, simply because I keep track on my planner every other day.

I have used quite a few planners in the past, but I had only stuck with one excellent planner just three years ago. I would highly recommend "Passion Planner" because they have fantastic layouts, and there are many things for you to write down to help you organise yourself. This planner is legit, I promise!

Check out their website to find out more about their excellent planner www.passionplanner.com

TIP #4 - SEPARATE YOUR CLOTHING IN DIFFERENT WAYS

I would highly recommend everyone to sort out your clothes into different types of clothing. For example, organise your tops, bottoms, undies, outerwear, outdoor wear, sportswear and socks separately inside your wardrobes or drawers. Trust me on this, and it will make it easier for you to look for your desired clothing whenever you need them. There is also another way of maintaining tidiness and cleanliness of your clothes by storing them in good condition. I have experienced myself to have a messy wardrobe, and It is a disaster.

TIP #5 - MAKE A SCHEDULE TO TIDY UP ALL YOUR BELONGINGS IN YOUR HOME

Try your best to find some time to schedule a time to tidy up and re-organised your crap; I mean your belongings! Nothing else feels better than to have your stuff stored in an ethical and tidy condition. Just don't be lazy and start sorting out your belongings.

TIP #6 - STOCK UP

There are a lot of things you can stock up in your home. For example, buy some spare toothpaste, toothbrushes, toiletries, first aid kits, food supplies, essential home tools, emergency kit and anything else you may need. Stocking up things into your house is good as you never know when you might need them and if you have a busy lifestyle, it is smart to say that you should never leave your cupboards empty.

TIP #7 - STORE YOUR LEAST ESSENTIAL THINGS IN BOXES

What are the least essential things exactly mean anyway? To put it in a shorter form, It is the "things you frequently use or never use". I can't name any particular least essential things as everyone has different preferences on the things we use and don't use. I would suggest making a list of the things you don't frequently use or even need at all for the time being. Once you're done making up your list, then you should be able to know what are the things you most likely need. After you are done sorting out, you can store your least essential belongings in boxes or plastic containers. There is no need to keep those things around in your home when you barely touch or even look at them. It can save up a lot of space, and it can also make your home look nice and clean.

TIP #8 - CREATE A BUDGET FILE IN YOUR LAPTOP

Keeping a budget file concerning your money would be a good start to keep track of your money, including your savings and expenses. You will be able to see how much you have to spend for the month and how much you are saving.

Let me share something. I was having a lot of difficulties to budget or to even stop myself from spending. So one day, I created a personalised budget file by using "Microsoft Excel". Ever since I started, I manage to decrease my spending and save more money. I think everyone should keep track of their money. I think this is just very essential to everyone. Just make sure that no one else has access to your laptop or computers. Make the file or the folder private just in case you lost your gadget.

Here's a sample template of the budget file that I had made. Feel free to download the file if you need it.

If you wish to download the Budget Plan template, feel free to click this link - Budget Plan to download the file to get started on your budgeting. Hope you find this is useful and Good luck!

TIP #9 - ALWAYS PREPARE YOUR STUFF IN ADVANCE

Please take note that this is not an act of uber crazy or even close to being OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). I would call this "Saving precious time". I believe it is best to prepare your stuff in advance. Take this as an example. There are plenty of times when you always find it hard to leave home on time for work or doing other personal errands. The problem could be you may have taken such a long time looking for your outfit, jewellery to put own or so on. It could also be because you woke up late and there is only less time for you to prepare before heading out. It is always the best choice to prepare your stuff for the next day, one day ahead or the night before. Don't worry about what other people would think, remember this all the time "Saving precious time".

I hope you find these tips useful and effective. Please feel free to leave me a comment below or email me at michellesochan@gmail.com for any further questions you may want to ask. I will be more than happy to help.

Beach Essentials

Have you ever encounter a moment when you have no clue on what to bring to the beach or that maybe you might be carrying more than you should be? Well here's an ultimate guide of what you need and what are essential to bring when hitting the beach for some relaxation and sunbathing.

I know quite a bunch of people who tend to over bring stuff to the beach though most of them do not do that intentionally. I guess some people don't know or have no clue what to bring. Therefore I thought of writing a blog about it, and hopefully, this could be of any help to anyone who needs it or know someone who does.

WHEN TO HIT THE BEACH

So when do we start hitting the beach? It has to be during the summer season, of course. If you enjoy being in the crowd, then weekends would be the best option for you. While if you prefer some peaceful yet relaxing beach moment, then you should go during the weekdays, where it is less crowded.

Secondly, make sure always to check your local weather forecast a few hours before you head to the beach - depending on before your travel journey to the beach you're planning to go.

Take some time to plan some beach, sunbathing sesh or picnic with your best pals. This beach day does not only help you relax, but it also allows you to bond with your friends, especially if you barely meet them due to your busy schedule.

According to the scientific experts, it is advisable to head to the beach during morning time in between 8:00 am to 11:00 am. These time around is good timing if you are after sunbathing as it is safer to stay under the sun during morning time to avoid some possible skin complications or skin disease and some other health issues that may affect you. Avoid going for sunbathing during the sun's prime hour, that's around the afternoon time.

Be sure to always apply some sunscreen from time to time to protect your skin.

BEACH ESSENTIALS (THINGS YOU REALLY NEED)

  • TOWEL (for showering)

  • BEACH TOWEL OR BEACH MAT

  • BIKINI OR BEACH SHORTS & TANK

  • A PAIR OF SUNGLASSES

  • EXTRA CLOTHES (optional)

  • A PAIR OF SLIPPERS

  • PORTABLE CHARGER (for your mobile phone, optional)

  • A SMALL BOOK TO READ (If you fancy reading, optional)

  • CAMERA OR MOBILE PHONE CAMERA

  • SHAMPOO & SHOWER GEL (in small containers)

  • SUNBLOCK LOTION OR TANNING LOTION

  • EXTRA UNDERWEAR, BRA

  • COMB OR BRUSH (for hair)

  • A PLASTIC BAG (for wet clothes)

EXTRA THINGS THAT ARE NOT ESSENTIAL BUT COULD BE USEFUL

  • CARD GAMES (such as playing cards, Monopoly Deal, UNO, etc)

  • A SMALL BOTTLE OF COLOGNE/ PERFUME (if you want to smell good)

  • A SMALL BOTTLE OF LOTION (ALOE VERA - good to apply on your skin after sunbathing)

  • BLUETOOTH SPEAKER (if you want to share your music with other beach-goers)

  • A PAIR OF EARPHONES (if you want to listen to your own music privately)

  • WATER SPRAY (this is good to spray off your face and body while sunbathing to cool yourself down)

  • ESSENTIAL MAKE-UP SET (for people, who can't live without applying make-up)

  • INFLATABLE FLOATS (some relaxation in the water)

  • BASIC INFLATABLE PUMP (OPTIONAL - some beaches may have pumping services)

  • SMALL UMBRELLA (in case of rain or too sunny and hot weather)

  • LITTLE SNACKS AND DRINKS (in case you get hungry and don't want to leave your spot to buy some food or if there's zero food stall on the beach you're going to)

WHAT "NOT" TO BRING OR WEAR

  • YOUR ENTIRE MAKE-UP KIT (for once be natural after spending your day at the beach, pease don't bring your entire kit, especially when you are just heading back home)

  • YOUR ENTIRE COSMETICS (just like what I have mentioned above, be natural)

  • BRINGING MORE THAN 2 OUTFITS (you're not doing any photo shooting, so bringing 1 outfit should be more than enough)

  • BRINGING OR WEARING TOO MANY JEWELLERY (trust me, you'll feel lighter and you might even lose it accidentally)

  • DON'T WEAR HIGH HEELS OR WEDGES (that is just unnecessary and it is not the most comfortable footwear to wear at the beach)

  • DON'T WEAR SHOES (not unless you want to have sands as souvenirs inside your shoes)

TIPS ON HOW TO FEEL LIGHT AND CARRY LESS CRAP (OR THINGS!)

  • WEAR THE SAME OUTFIT (wearing the same outfit on the way to the beach and leaving the beach would be for your own convenience as you can save space in your bag and the weight of your bag too)

  • CARRY ONE BACKPACK OR TOTE BAG (it will be nice to carry just one bag or a tote bag so it will be hassle-free and you only need to check on one thing whenever you are away fromt your spot - if you're in the water)

  • SEPARATE YOUR THINGS IN SMALL PURSES (stuffing everything in your bag would be a bad idea. Not only it will look messy but it will also give you a hard time finding your things)

  • BUY SNACKS OR DRINKS WHEN YOU GET TO THE BEACH (it will make you feel a lot lighter if you don't bring your snacks or drinks on your way to the beach. Not unless there isn't any food stall at the beach you're going to or you're planning a beach/ picnic date with your loved ones)

  • SHARE SUNSCREEN LOTION, SHAMPOO AND SHOWER GEL (it's good to have at least one person to bring one of these, so it can reduce everyone some weight in everyone's bag. Not unless you have to use a specified brand for personal reasons or if you are going alone)

  • BRING A SMALL WALLET/ PURSE FOR MONEY, CARD AND PERSONAL ID (trust me don't bring your big wallet, it will save a lot of space storing your money and cards into a smaller wallet or purse.)

I hope you find these information useful and I hope this could help you organise yourself when heading to the beach. If you got any other questions, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. I will be more than happy to help!

15 Reasons Why I Start Blogging

So in case you're wondering why you end up in this page. It is probably because of the title that i put up. First of all, this isn't about the successful "13 Reasons Why" TV show which I loved dearly. But this blog entry is basically all about the 15 reasons why I start writing blogs and what made me want to put it out in public.

So here goes my 15 reasons!

REASON #1 - I FANCY WRITING

I have a strong dedication to writing. Ever since I learn how to hold a pencil, all I do is write, write and write about things I learn in school, and eventually, I started to write my diary, then a journal. I like expressing myself in the paper. There is nothing else that makes me feel more at ease than expressing myself by writing down my thoughts and feelings. I am the type of person who prefers to list down my views, opinions and possible criticism about specific things.

REASON #2 - SOME THINGS ARE BEST WRITTEN DOWN

Just like what I have mentioned in Reason #1, some things are better off in written words than spoken words. That is simply because writing it down means more details and information about certain things. I got to say, I like reading fully detailed things, so I would do the same too.

REASON #3 - I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO START A BLOG

It took me some time to feel confident and brave enough to start my blog. I remember telling a few of my close friends a few years back that I wanted to start blogging, but I wasn't that confident at that time yet. Luckily, I gained some confidence in myself, and I finally made it happen. So voila and again, welcome to my blog!

REASON #4 - I LIKE TO EXPRESS MY THOUGHTS, IN WORDS

Don't get me wrong, I like to express myself verbally in front of people, but I think that I can express myself much better by writing it down since I'm into details and I do write quite informative. Plus, every time I write something, I always consider this as an opportunity to learn new words, more profound words and words that are not used very often. Discovering and expressing at the same time are fun in my world, and maybe to some people too.

REASON #5 - I TAKE BLOGGING SERIOUSLY

I have a secret to share with you all. I keep track of my blogs, and I got a schedule for what and when do I start a new blog. What can I say, I am a little crazy organised person, and I prefer to keep things in order. I think that's either a curse or a gift. Either way, it keeps me on track, and I make things happen.

REASON #6 - IT'S A FUN PASSION

I never actually thought that writing blogs would be entertaining to me. I know that writing a diary or journal is fun, but writing blogs are entirely different as it is made for people to see, read the absolute fact and that I have to keep it amusing and engaging. I somehow treat blogging like some experimentation. I don't just focus on blogging one subject, but I do write a ton of categories such as Travel, Dining, Fashion, Lifestyle, Tips and Hiking. I'm all about exploring.

REASON #7 - SOMETHING TO KEEP ME PRODUCTIVE

I like to be productive and not spending my day off of doing absolutely nothing. So by writing blogs means I am productive, and I'm doing something useful in my life rather than being lazy and be bored at home. I always felt ecstatic and satisfied whenever I finish up a new blog.

REASON #8 - I HAVE A LOT TO SHARE ABOUT LIFE EXPERIENCES

I have been through a lot in life, and I am not ashamed to share most of my life experiences, good or bad, I treat them all as a blessing even though there are time that I may still be super sensitive about my past, but hey at least I learn something, which means something for me to share. Everybody learn life experiences in many different ways, but I know that my experiences can somehow relate to a lot of people, and I am more than happy and willingly would love to share it to people.

REASON #9 - WRITING PUSH ME TO BE CREATIVE

Writing things is not as easy as you may think it is. Writing takes a lot of effort, thoughts in mind and most importantly, how to make it sound exciting and not dull. When I started writing blogs, I honestly would say that I was quite slow, but I am improving, and it has been pushing me to be innovative and making my blog worth reading.

REASON #10 - THIS ISN'T MY FIRST BLOG PAGE

Yes, that's right! This website isn't my first blog page. Back in high school, Xanga.com was very trendy, and everybody at school uses Xanga to write blogs. I was really into it, and I got to say that my blogs back then are very childish and shallow but cute. I remember using a lot of emojis and shortcut words back in the days. I'm just happy that I have upgraded so much from what I used to.

REASON #11 - I MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

I have told myself millions of times that I would start my blog one day, and indeed, I did. I know it may have taken me years, but I made it happen. I don't say things, but I do what I say, which means I'm not a bullshitter.

REASON #12 - WRITING HAVE GOT ME TO KNOW MYSELF MUCH BETTER & DEEPER

As I keep writing blogs, I have come to realise more about myself, something I have never noticed before. An example would be I have come to realise how madly crazy I am when it comes to this matter. I care about what I write and how to always improve myself even better. I have also learned how much further I want to gain from blogging. Who knows maybe one day, I will become an influential blogger? I mean anything is possible.

REASON #13 - I BECAME MORE EXPRESSIVE THAN EVER

I have also realised that I have become more and more expressive. I have been more passionate and engaging.

REASON #14 - I HAVE MY GOOD & BAD MOMENTS

I have deliberated with myself whether I should start my blog or not countless of times. Half of the reason why is that I was afraid of criticism and I'm not very sure how would people react to this. But then I was fortunate enough to have some good people in my life supporting me on this. Without them, I would probably wouldn't have the courage to do it. But of course, everything is still up to me, which by the end of the day, it will always be my decision.

REASON #15 - IF NOT NOW THEN WHEN

That has said it all, I guess. If not, now then when? I was caught up in between low confidence and lack of motivation to start a blog a few years ago. Until last year, I snapped myself and told myself that I got to do this now or never. I'm 26 years old, but it's still never too late. There isn't any age limit for blogging, and nothing is going to stop me once I started.

I hope you find this blog entertaining to read. I want to share some bits of the reasons why I started my blog. I think it's important for people to know why and for people to see a bit about my story.

Yours Truly,

Michelle Chan

A Secret Prison in Cambodia

As promised from my blog on "Discover Cambodia" , this is a blog about Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, also known as the S21 Prison. Now the reason why I decided to make a blog about this is that I find this incident the most horrific and barbaric genocide I have ever read in history in my 26 years.

This blog contains essential information about the secret Prison and some stories that I had learned from the audio guide tour when I visited Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum & The Cheoung Ek Killing Fields and based on my self-research, courtesy of the internet. Some images and statements are written and posted in this blog may be sensitive to some people. This is the stories of the 14,000 victims in the hands of the Khmer Rouge. These victims may have died brutally, but their deaths will not be left forgotten. It will forever stay in history.

THE KHMER ROUGE

Khmer Rouge is a communist party in Cambodia, who took control of Cambodia on April 17, 1975, until 1979. The Khmer Rouge wanted to transform Cambodia into a classless society in which there are no rich and no poor people. Group gatherings are forbidden as this is a sign of plotting a war against the Khmer Rouge. They have forced around 2 million people in Phnom Penh and other cities for some agricultural work and whereas thousands of people had died during the hard labour work through endless work, starvations, beatings or executions. The Khmer Rouge had set up secret prisons, where they captured, brutally tortured and executed thousands of people.

THE S21 PRISON

The Tuol Sleng Genocide, also known as the S21 Prison, used to be a school before it was turned into a secret prison by the Khmer Rouge. The secret Prison was operated for four horrific years, which also means four long years of tortures and executions of mostly innocent people.

WHO WERE CAPTURED, TORTURED AND KILLED

Most of the people who are brought into the secret Prison are either guilty or innocent and has nothing to do with whatsoever the war that the Khmer Rouge are having during those time. The Khmer Rouge members/ soldiers/ guards or other civilians are also pins pointing at some random people or somebody who may potentially look like a traitor in their eyes. These innocent victims were tricked for a job opportunity. Little did they know that they are being brought into a dark place. While some people were captured because they are traitors, but I guess we will never know who are the real traitors and who is not. You will find out what I meant about the previous sentences I have written as you continue to read this blog.

6. While getting lashes or electrification you must not cry at all.

7. Do nothing, sit still and wait for my orders. If there is no order, keep quiet. When I ask you to do something, you must do it right away without protesting.

THE EVIDENCE

PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE PRISONERS

The photographs of the prisoners' headshots and torture photographs were found and discovered by the Vietnamese Army. The prisoners' names were all changed into numbers. In other words, they are no longer identified by their names but by numbers appointed to them instead.

Photographs of the S21 prisoners

Photographs of the S21 prisoners

TORTURE ROOMS

There are plenty of torture rooms in the S21 Prison. The torture rooms are used as interrogation rooms as well. The prisoners are tied up and must answer the questions that are being asked by the interrogators. Refusing to answer a question or making up stories will face an extreme and painful torturing. Some torturing method that the interrogators used are electric wires, drownings and some other terrible and inhuman ways.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED FOR TORTURING PRISONERS

When S21 Prison was discovered, the remaining of the tools and pieces of equipment for torturing prisoners were recovered as well. The people who have survived this had explained and demonstrated how the equipment works. But I rather not share this as it is very heartbreaking to hear, but if you want to know more about it, you may google it to know more information about their torturing methods.

This is one of the torturing equipments found in S21 Prison. No caption needed, you may use your own interpretation based on the image on the right.

JAIL CELLS

They have built jail cells for the prisoners around the premises. The jail cells are tiny, and by the looks of it, it is just enough for one person to fit very tightly inside the cell. The prisoners were tied up while their faces were covered with a sack and limited hole for them to get some air to breathe. The prisoners are not allowed to speak with any other cellmates or fellow prisoners, they are to remain silent under any circumstances.

CLOTHES OF THE PRISONERS

Plenty of the prisoners clothing was found after the Vietnamese army discovered the prison. The clothes were pilled together in memory of the victims.

MASS GRAVE AT CHEOUNG EK (THE KILLING FIELDS)

Cheoung Ek Killing Fields was known to be the worst mass grave in Cambodia. The reason for this is that there are so many people who have died here. Some victims were buried alive and also the fact that this mass killing was very secretive until the Vietnamese Army finally discovered it. Imagine if they didn't, then more people could have been dead as well.

RECOVERED PIECES OF BONES AND THE SKULLS

Pieces of bones, teeth and skulls of the prisoners were found buried in the mass grave at the Killing Field as part of the evidence of this barbaric crime.

WHEN DID THE KILLINGS END

VIETNAM CAME TO RESCUE

In 1979, the S21 Prison was discovered by the Vietnamese Army after four long years of barbaric acts of the Khmer Rouge towards thousands of people.

THE PUNISHMENT

Most of the remaining leaders of the Khmer Rouge were sentenced to life imprisonment by the ECCC (Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia) for crimes against humanity. Life imprisonment doesn't completely justify what the Khmer Rouge had done to the dead prisoners. I believe that the punishment should be as brutal as what they had caused to the thousand lives of the prisoners.

HOW MANY PEOPLE SURVIVED IN THE S21 PRISON

There are only seven survivors that are known to have survived the S21 Prison. 7 out of 14,000 victims that is just sick! Three of the survivors are still alive, and they can be seen around the museum. You may have a quick chat with the survivors if you want to. I'm sure they will be more than happy to share their life story back in S21 Prison.

A 16 YEARS OLD BOY WAS RELEASE DUE TO A STRANGER'S SACRIFICE

This story is base on the story that I have heard from the audio guide tour. There was a 16 years old boy who was captured and unaware of what was going on. He had lost his family along the way and was forced to stay with the other prisoners. A kind and a selfless man begged a prison guard to spare the boy. The man insisted "He is too young, please let him go". The man did not stop asking the prison guard until one day, the boy was released, but in return, the prison guard executed the man who had helped, and he sacrificed himself to save the boy. The boy did not know the man's name, but he will forever remember and be grateful to what the man had done for him to live.

VISITING THE TUOL SLENG GENOCIDE MUSEUM (S21 PRISON)

Tuol Sleng was formerly a high school. It was the secret prison held by the Khmer Rouge in 1975-1979. There were about 14,000 people who were imprisoned there with only seven known survivors. There are around 4 buildings in the premises. The Khmer Rouge had turned those 4 buildings as interrogation rooms, torture chambers, jail cells, torture equipments room and many more other barbaric acts. It was discovered by the Vietnamese army in 1979.

BUILDING A

Building A is the closest to the entrance of the S21 Prison.

Building A is the very first place prisoners were brought into to have their photographs taken and their information written down. Once they have registered, their names were no longer their names, they were given numbers instead. They were forced to give up whatever belongings they have brought into the prison.

INTERROGATION AND TORTURE ROOM

Soon after they were settled, the prison guards brought the prisoners into the interrogation room where they were forced to talk about their life in detailed and to confess to their sins. The prisoners are not allowed to scream, cry or have any emotions when they are being tortured. Each prisoner was scheduled to be interrogated and tortured at least twice a day and every day, and so on.

BUILDING B

PHOTOGRAPHS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT FOR TORTURING

This building was filled with the victim's headshots, photographs of the leader, tortures and dead prisoners due to extreme beatings or starvation. Some equipment for torturing can be seen being displayed around the building with images of how it is used.

BUILDING C

JAIL CELLS

This building was the prisoners' jail cells. If you look closely, the building was covered with metal wires. The metal wires were placed around the whole building so that the prisoners won't attempt to escape.

BUILDING D

MORE PHOTOGRAPHS AND MOVIE ROOMS

You may find more photographs of the prisoners, prison guards, the leaders, executions and other documents in this building. There are two movie rooms for some documentaries clips about the S21 Prison. Please note that there is a scheduled time when you can enter and watch the short films.

Another Khmer Rouge's killing methods as stated on the board,

The Gallows - This pole with cables attached to it had been used for the student to conduct their exercise. The Khmer Rouge utilised this place as interrogation room. The interrogators tied both hands of the prisoners to the back by a rope and lift the prisoners upside down. They did like this until the prisoners lost consciousness. Then they dipped the prisoner's head into a jar of smelly, filthy water, which they normally used as fertiliser for the crops in the terrace outside. By doing so, the victims quickly regain consciousness, and that the interrogators could continue their interrogation.

VISITING THE KILLING FIELDS IN CHEOUNG EK

Cheoung Ek also known as The Killing Fields. After the interrogation, beatings, manipulations and starvation, this is where victims were brought to face their cruel execution. There is an audio guide tour included in the package deal to tour you around to all the sites in the fields and where the people were buried. At the end of the audio tour, The Memorial Stupa will be the last stop where the remains of the victims (The skulls) are preserved and are colour coded by genders and how and what weapons were used to execute the victims. You may pay your respect by lighting a candle or offering some flowers.

1. TRUCK STOP

The prisoners were tricked by the guards and were told that they are bringing them to a new home while being blindfolded, only to find out that they are not going to last in this world any longer.

As written in the text,Truck Stop - Here, was the place where a trucks transporting victims to be exterminated form Tuol Sleng Prison and other places in the country, stopped. Trucks would arrive 2 or 3 times a month or every 3 weeks. Each truck hel…

Truck Stop - Here, was the place where a trucks transporting victims to be exterminated form Tuol Sleng Prison and other places in the country, stopped. Trucks would arrive 2 or 3 times a month or every 3 weeks. Each truck held 20 to 30 frightened, blindfolded and silent prisoners. When the trucks arrived, the victims were led directly to be executed at the ditches and pits or were sent to be detained in the darken and gloomy prison nearby. After January 7, 1979, one truck remained, but it has since been taken away.

2. DETENTION AND THE EXECUTIONER'S WORKING SPACE

After transferring the prisoners to the Killing Fields, they were brought into a small hut while being blindfolded, just waiting for their time to get executed.

The Dark and Gloomy Detention - Here, was the place where victims transported from Tuol Sleng and other places in the country were detained. Usually, when the truck arrived, the victims were executed immediately. However, as the number of victims to be executed was increased up to per 300 per day, executioners failed in attempt to kill them within a day. That is why they were detained for execution the next day. The detention was contracted from wood with galvanised steel roof. its wall was built with two layers of flat wood were to darken and also prevent prisoners seeing each other. Unfortunately, the dark and gloomy detention was dismantled in 1979.

The Executioners' Working Office - Here, was the place where executioners stationed permanently at Choeung Ek worked. The office as well as the Killing Fields were equipped with electric power which enabled them to conduct executions and to read and sign the rosters that accompanied the victims to the site at the night time.

3. STORAGE ROOM FOR KILLING TOOLS

Before the hut was removed, there used to be a room, where the guards stored their killing tools.

As written in the text from Left photoThe Killing Tools Storage Room - Here, was the place where the killing told such as shackles, leg irons, a hatchet, knifes hoes, digging hoes, shoves, iron ox, cart axles were stored. This instrument was lost in…

The Chemical Substances Storage Room - Here, was the place where chemical substances such as DDT.. was kept. Executioners scattered these substances over dead bodies of the victims at once after execution. This action had two purposes; Firstly to eliminate the stench from the dead bodies which could potentially raise suspicion among people working near by the Killing Fields and secondly was to kill off victims who were buried alive.

4. THE LAKE

Who could ever thought that this lake was once buried with dead people, most of them were children.

5. VICTIMS CLOTHING

You may find some clothing laying on the ground just like how they were found when the rescuers have discovered this secret Killing Fields. You may also find some pieces of broken bones left on the ground.

6. VICTIMS BONES AND TEETH

These are the remaining bones and teeth that were found around the Killing Fields.

7. THE KILLING TREE AND THE MAGIC TREE

The Killing Tree was used for the execution of infants or newborn babies. The Khmer Rouge believed that once their parents were executed, these little ones should be executed too so they won't seek any revenge. What is even more depressing is how they ended their life. The executioners smashed the babies head onto the tree; it is the easiest way to commit an execution according to the audio source. That is just inhuman and barbaric.

The Magic Tree was installed with a loudspeaker, which they will play loud music whenever they are scheduled to execute a group of prisoners. The purpose for this is that they are avoiding any nearby neighbours to hear the prisoners screams while executing them. Just imagine, the music that was being played at those times was the last music that the prisoners had heard before they die.

8. MEMORIAL STUPA

This stupa is where all the recovered skulls are placed as a memorial stand for the purpose of remembering this horrific crime. The skulls were divided and colour coded into genders, ages, and what weapons were used during their execution. Since the executioners were saving bullets and may alarm the nearby neighbours, they used weapons to hit the prisoners head once or some even twice and then slits their throat and let them bleed to death.

9. THE MASS GRAVE AROUND THE KILLING FIELDS

Some visitors will leave some flowers, bracelets or notes (donations) as a sign of paying respect for the victims of S21 Prison.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS ON THE TOUR

First of all, I would like to share that there are no beyond words that can describe these horrific crimes that were committed by the Khmer Rouge. I have read and studied about The Holocaust held by the Nazis or The Japanese Occupation around Asia in World War II. There are both wrong and horrible. However, the S21 Prison is what I felt the most heartbreaking. I think it's the fact that S21 Prison was kept secret and nobody knows about it for four years, and the hands of their own people implemented it.

I am getting emotional while writing this blog. All of the things I have seen inside the museum and the things I have heard from the recorded audio guide are coming back in my mind as I write this blog. It is indeed hard to explain what I had felt on that day when I visited. It's like I can hear them scream in my mind at some point and imagining how those victims were tortured and executed. I can picture them in my mind, and it is horrible and quite traumatising actually. It is just so cruel.

However, don't get me wrong, I felt blessed to have visited S21 Prison, and I had learned a lot of information during my visit. I would say that reading history through the internet or books are not enough resources. You got to be there, right on that spot to see it with your own eyes.
