Steak Night at Meat Depot

Are you looking for a nice steak restaurant that allows you to pick your meat somewhere in Metro Manila in the Philippines? Well, then Meat Depot is what you're looking for in town. Meat Depot has two branches in Metro Manila (Banawe and Paranaque). Meat Depot is an affordable steakhouse, where you can pick your meat and choose which meat temperature you prefer to have.

MEAT DEPOT SHOP IN BANAWE

Top - Meat Production

Bottom - Frozen meat for you to take away

Meat Depot offers a lot of meat selections such as Wagyu Beef, Angus Beef Tenderloin, Striploin & Ribeye, Dry Aged Ribeye, Ribeye Grass Fed, Angus Beef T-Bone, Prime Tapa, Pork Salpicao, Roast Beef and Lamb Rib Rack.

All of their meat has different weight, and it is charged per weight. This is very good especially for those who are not a heavy steak eater, they may choose smaller meat so it wouldn't be too much or if you are a steak lover, then you may select much bigger meat for you to dig in and enjoy. There is a cooking fee of P100 per meat, which is quite reasonable, in my opinion. They also have a bunch of different frozen meat for you to buy and take it home if you fancy.

Step by step in pictures

Step by step in pictures

There are 5 steps for you to customise your own steak:

STEP 1 - CHOOSE YOUR MEAT

There is plenty of meat for you to choose from the big fridges. The advantage for this is that you can see the actual meat that you're having, how big it is, and how much it cost.

STEP 2 - FILL OUT YOUR ORDER SLIP

After selecting your meat, you may fill up your order form. You may choose which meat temperature you prefer, and you may also add to your drink selection. The restaurant serves white or red white from Yellow Tail brand and any other add ons such as Soup or dessert (subject to availability) can be added in the order sheet. Please note that there is a cooking fee of P100 per meat.

STEP 3 - BRING YOUR ORDER SLIP & PAY AT THE COUNTER

Yes! That's right. You have to pay as you order, which I think is smart as you can leave anytime and there is no need to wait for your bill after you finish your meal.

STEP 4 - FIND A SEAT, GET YOUR UTENSILS AND CONDIMENTS

After paying, find a seat immediately, and while you're finding one, you may get your utensils and your condiments such as Black Pepper, Salt, Tabasco and Ketchup.

STEP 5 - CLAIM YOUR ORDER AND DIG IN

Typically, they will bring your steak to your table with the tag number provided by the staff when you pay. Once you receive your steak, remember to take a picture of your steak before digging in and then share it to your family and friends. ENJOY!

MY OVERALL RATINGS

FOOD

The steak was delicious and was up to my expectation. I would highly recommend the Ribeye Steak or the Lamb Rib Rack for you to try. If you prefer a juicier and not-so-hard to bite meat, then you should ask for a medium rare for your steak.

SERVICE

Meat Depot has a self-service station for picking your meat, filling up your order form for your meta descriptions and other add-ons, placing your order in the counter, getting and finding your table and prepping your condiments for your steak.

AMBIENCE

The restaurant looks pretty lively as many hungry people are visiting it. Don't be surprised as you will be surrounded by meat everywhere. So if you are allergic to the smell of fresh meat, then you should pick a table far from the fridge.

SPENDING

On top of everything, it will be around P800-P1000 per person, depending on the meat weight, drinks selections and add ons. The price range is quite affordable, in my opinion. After all, you're eating steak and steak are not cheap.

Overall, the experience was great, and the concept was unique to me. I like the idea that you can pick your meat and how you want it to be cooked. I will come back here for steak night.

Hiking - Pico De Loro (Ternate, Cavite, Philippines)

Pico De Loro is in Ternate, Cavite, Philippines. Pico De Loro means the "Parrot's Beak".

Why Pico De Loro? The answer is straightforward, Pico De Loro offers an astonishing view, and it is suitable for beginners and even for experienced hikers. Although it is said to be a minor climb with the difficulty level of 4/10, never underestimate Pico De Loro as it can also be challenging for you. The steep and muddy path can be a struggle while finishing the hike. Make sure to wear the right trekking shoes or trekking sandals to protect yourself.

According to the DENR, Pico De Loro will be temporarily closed starting from October 1, 2016, until further notice for some improvement and a rest for the mountain. It is the perfect time to do it as no one know when Pico De Loro is open again for hikers. The weather forecast said that it would rain on the weekend (Saturday, September 24), which did not happen. Thank God for the good weather!

WAY TO GET THERE

The only way to get to Ternate, Cavite from Metro Manila is by bus or van. If you prefer DIY, you may take a bus via Cavite at the Coastal Mall and ride a tricycle to go to the DENR site, or you may book with an agency that offers Pico De Loro hike. Roundtrip transportation is typically included in the tour package. It is less hassle and more convenient when booking with an agency. Since my friend Jedai and I booked with "Beyond Outdoor Adventures", the meeting point is at Caltex Gas Station Gil Puyat Ave, Makati City at around 4:30 am. It is advisable to leave early to avoid traffic.

JUMP OFF AT DENR

Manila - Cavite takes typically around 2 hours (without traffic). As soon as we reached Cavite, we headed to the DENR Campsite for registration and to use the toilet. Please note there are toilet charges of P5 per entering, P10 for a shower, P10 for doing your "thing".

CREEK, ROCKS AND MUDS

We started our hike at 7:30 am. We were with a team of 10 people with two guides (Allan and Marlon). Upon starting our trek, we were already questioning whether Pico De Loro is minor or should it be considered as a major hike. We were surprisingly greeted with creek, rocks, both small and big ones and muds. The first 30 minutes trek is already enough proof that this will be a challenging hike. We were given in between break for 5 minutes from time to time. Before hiking further up to Pico De Loro peak, I have read a few blogs about this hike and already know what to expect. The bloggers were right. We need to rely almost 90% on the trees or woods to support us while we climb up and down. There was no wind until we reach the base camp, which means water is our new best friend. There is no need to worry about running out of the water as they sell water up on the base camp for P50 per bottle.

THE BASE CAMP

After 2 and a half hours, we reached the base camp at 10:00 am, and we were given a break for 30 minutes to rest, to eat and to take pictures. At the base camp, they sell Water, Juice, Gatorade, Halo Halo and snacks such as Pancit Canton (Noodles) and Nissin Cup Noodles. You should expect to pay a higher price as it takes a lot of effort for them to bring all those up to the mountain. After we finished our snacks, we went to take some pictures. It is fascinating to see the view with my own eyes and even whispered to myself "I hiked this for 2 hours and a half".

ASCEND TO THE SUMMIT

There are a lot of people by the time we were heading up to the summit, and we have to line up. It is expected as Pico De Loro is closing soon. Hiking up the summit is super challenging as we need to climb up and hold on to the rocks, trees and the green plants. Beware of some falling stones, both small or big! The assault gets harder as we get closer to the top. We were lucky that the guides were there to guide us to the top. After reaching the top, I forgot all the trouble and all the tiredness I have dealt with when I saw the stunning view and the fact that I am on top of Mt. Pico De Loro. All the hardship was all worth it!

THE MONOLITH

The Monolith is located at the side of Pico De Loro Summit. It is incredible to this see this with my own eyes, from pictures to reality. I was fortunate enough to see this before they close. We did not get to climb the Monolith as it is closed since March 2016 because of some soil erosion and loss of vegetation. It would have been perfect if we were able to climb it, but seeing it on the other side is already a token.

DESCENT BACK TO TRAIL HEAD

At 12:30 pm, we start to descend back to the DENR site. It is shorter heading back down. However, It is a battle between slippery and trying not to fall. Heading down from the Summit is very slippery and sitting down while going down is recommended but beware not to strip your pants, sitting down sideways while going down will be more comfortable. As we get closer to the DENR site, the more it gets muddier and slippier. I accidentally fell once as I stepped into a muddy path with pieces of stems by accident and slipped. I got a few scratches on my right arm but other than that I'm all fine, and since I am not wearing proper trekking shoes, so I'm having difficulties hiking down. It is advisable to wear trekking shoes or sandals to protect yourself from any accidents (minor or major). We finally reached the DENR site at 2:00 pm, and we quickly freshen up ourselves and change.

It is a lot challenging than how it looks

MEAL AT LOLO CLARO's

We went to Lolo Claro's to have our late lunch there. The set meal (choice of fried chicken, pancit or lumpia with rice) cost around P125, including one drink. They also offer other local dishes on their menu. The food was quite delicious and rewarding after a tiring hike.

Overall, the whole experience was amusing and unforgettable. Although I have done hiking many times back in Hong Kong, Pico De Loro is probably the most challenging hike I ever have done in my life. It is the second mountain I have hiked in the Philippines, and I would say hiking in the Philippines is very different and challenging. The whole adventure was worth it.

My next hike in the Philippines will be at Mt. Pulag. Watch out for my next blog!

Painting with Sip & Gogh (Eastwood, Philippines)

My friend Iris and I went to try out some painting session with Sip & Gogh located at Le Grand 3 in Eastwood, Quezon City. Please note that we are not an artist and neither we know how to paint. We want to try painting and do something new on a Friday night (aside from drinking!). Sip & Gogh charges P1,000 per head for their Open Session. It includes all paintings materials, an instructor to guide and complimentary snacks and drinks (Wine, juice, coffee or tea). For every Open Session, they have four different slots per day. We were supposed to take the 5:30 pm slot, however, the traffic was super bad that day, and we had to catch the 8:30 pm session instead.

We were greeted nicely at the reception, and we quickly pick which paintings we want to paint. The instructor prepared our paint colours according to which pictures we have chosen, and we're guided promptly by our instructor on which area to paint first.

I'm ready to Gogh!

It was fun to do the painting after for so long finally. My last touch on paintings was back in high school in 2005. It was quite relaxing, and I never knew art could be so much fun. I was sipping wine while twitching my fingers with a brush. This is something I look forward to doing during my free time. I think I just found my new hobby!

Kettle (Eastwood, Philippines)

Kettle is in Eastwood Mall in Quezon City. Kettle was opened in June 2016 by Chef Chiloy Santos. Kettle is American and European cuisine, and it is famous for its Fried Chicken butter cooking style. Since my friend, Iris and I were looking for places to have a quick dinner before our Painting session with Sip & Gogh (check blog: http://www.michellesochan.com/blogs/2016/9/24/painting-with-sip-gogh-eastwood-philippines ) we decided to check out Kettle as we read such nice feedback about this restaurant.

We start off with a glass of Sangria for my friend Iris and a glass of Mojito for me. The drinks were both delicious.

Sangria and Mojito

Sangria and Mojito

For starters, we had the US Angus Brisket Sisig Tacos with Pickled Slaw, Cilantro and Chipotle Pepper Coulis. The Sisig Tacos was superb! The taste is something unique, and the meat temperature was just right.

For the main course, we had a Nori Chicken and Matcha Waffle. The Chicken was cooked with butter, and the flavouring was deliciously prepared. The Waffle is best to combine with the maple syrup sauce.

We did not have any dessert as we were running out of time as we need to catch our painting session with Sip & Gogh. I will come back to dine in Kettle very soon and try their other dishes.

FOOD AND DRINKS

The food and drinks were satisfying, and the taste of the Sisig Tacos is unforgettable. This is probably the best Sisig Tacos I ever had.

SERVICE

The service was very efficient, and the staff were friendly.

AMBIENCE

The ambience of the restaurant is quite relaxing. However, the air conditioner needs to be improved as it is slightly hot.

Bicol - Legazpi & Matnog Trip

It has been 12 years since me, and my childhood friends, Iris, Jedai, Rachel, Nathalie and Geraldine haven't seen each other completely. There is a saying that there is always a right time for everything and I believe that it is about time that we all reunite and go on a trip. We decided as a group to go on a weekend trip to Bicol to see the active and beautiful Mount Mayon.

Watch our video to Bicol and don't forget to read my blog.

We took an early flight from Manila-Legazpi on September 10, 2016, via Cebu Pacific. A big tip for those taking Cebu Pacific flight, pick the seat on D, E or F to have a better view of the Mt. Mayon (If it's not foggy).

Arrived Legazpi Airport and we quickly took a selfie with Mayon (Although it's still foggy at the time)

Arrived Legazpi Airport and we quickly took a selfie with Mayon (Although it's still foggy at the time)

LEGAZPI

We landed Legazpi at 6:15 am, and the first thing we did was to take a selfie with Mt. Mayon in the background. There is transportation waiting for travellers as soon as you step out of the airport. We took two tricycles (7 people) for P60 each to bring us to our hotel.

EMBARCADERO HOTEL

We chose to stay at the Embarcadero Hotel because of its location, convenient for transportation and they have plenty of restaurants nearby. However, we also had plenty of unwanted experience in this hotel. The lobby is too hot, our rooms are not fully furnished, and we had holes below our air conditioner, there are too many black ants, they seem to come out whenever we're not looking. There are no windows in our room, and the aircon takes a long time to be cool. Please note that we are not very picky about hotels, but I think our complaints were entirely reasonable considering it is a "hotel". If you are not super tight on budget, might as well find other places to stay. I will not recommend this hotel to anyone at all.

CAGSAWA RUINS

Cagsawa Ruins is one of Philippines historical churches. During the Mayon eruption in 1814, the Cagsawa Church was ruined, and the belfry was the only one that was left behind surviving up to this day. It has become one of Albay's tourist destination. We were amazed to see the Cagsawa Ruins and its historical past. Please note that there is an entrance fee of P10 per person to enter Cagsawa Ruins.

THE MAYON VOLCANO

Mayon Volcano is an active volcano located in Albay. Mt. Mayon is known for its perfect cone and stunning shape. Mt. Mayon has destroyed many people's houses during its 1814 eruption, about 2,500 people were killed, which has made Mt. Mayon remarkable. During our trip to Bicol, the Mt. Mayon was hoisted to Alert no. 1 and eruption may occur at any time. We were fortunate enough that there was no eruption during our trip, and we were able to see the Mayon.

From textbook to posters to reality, the active and beautiful Mt. Mayon.

ATV RIDE TO MT. MAYON (BICOL ATV ADVENTURE)

We head to Bicol ATV Adventure to ride ATV to Mt. Mayon, which is only 5 minutes away from Cagsawa Ruins. We took the 1-hour ATV ride that cost around P500 per head. We were given a discount as it is the non-peak season, though I think it's because of the Alert no. 1. That was my 3rd ATV ride and three of my friends, first time to ride ATV. The trip was a lot challenging than we expected. We have to go through rivers, rocks and hot water splashing on us. I got splashed once, and it was quite painful. We were so lucky that Mt. Mayon was not covered with fogs when we were taking plenty of pictures.

LIGNON HILL

We took two tricycles from Cagsawa Ruins to Lignon Hill, and it cost us P60 per tricycle. However, the tricycles were not allowed to ride up the hill. Some of us took a motorcycle ride P20 per person to get to the mountain, while the other half of the group decided to walk up the hill, which will take 15 minutes. Lignon Hill offers a 360-degree view of the Albay Gulf. There are various activities to do as well, such as Zipline, Rappelling, Paintball, Hanging Bridge, and many more. Beware of the red ants as they are everywhere and their bites are mad painful.

ZIPLINE

One of the favourite activities in Lignon Hill is the Zipline. There are two types of zip lines - Basic (P250) and Superman (P350). Four people chose the Basic while my friend, Jedai and I decided to do Superman, which is more advanced and fun!

JAPANESE TUNNEL

The Japanese Tunnel was built during World War 2. The Tunnel was used as their defensive line over the American and Filipino soldiers. The Japanese Tunnel can be found at the base of Lignon Hill with an entrance fee of P20 per head. You need a guide to bring you there, and a flashlight or you may also use your cellphone light inside the Tunnel. We saw three different statues of Japanese soldiers with their belongings such as a typewriter, luggage and gold. It is incredible how the Japanese were able to build this Tunnel during the WW2.

1ST COLONIAL GRILL

1st Colonial Grill is in Ayala Malls. It is a 20-minute walk from Embarcadero Hotel. It is famous for its Sili Ice Cream (Spicy Ice Cream).

There are three different levels - Level 1 (spicy), Level 2 (super spicy) and Level 3 (extremely spicy). We ordered a bunch of food as we are in the mood to try out the local cuisine in Bicol. The food is all delicious and they are all spicy but yummy! Three of my friends decided to take Level 2 of Sili Ice cream, and it was very spicy that they couldn't even finish it.

MATNOG (SORSOGON)

On our second day in Bicol, we have decided to go on an Island hopping trip in Matnog, Sorsogon. It takes around 2.5-3 hours car ride to get to Matnog and 30 minutes boat ride to the Islands. We booked our tour with Trevally Travel and Tours. We paid P1,665 per head including 1 gallon of water, pick up and drop off from the hotel, tourism and environmental fees, tour guides and boat rental fees. The lunch is not included as we prefer to pick our food and ask the locals to cook the food for us. We spend about P1,212 for food (two fish, one squid, one whole chicken, 1 kg Liempo, 1 kg pork meat for sinigang, vegetables for sinigang, condiments, charcoal, rice and sausages) and P300 to pay for the locals for helping us cook our meal.

TIKLING ISLAND

Our first Island trip is at Tikling Island. It is quiet Island with pink sands. There are no resorts or cottages in the Island as the Island is owned privately. Tikling Island is a very relaxing place to be.

CALINTAAN CAVE

Our second stop is Calintaan Cave. The rock formation is unique, and since it is still low tide, we were allowed to swim inside the cave. It is about 5-6 feet deep and eventually gets lower as you get closer inside the cave. It is not recommended to float inside the cave when it is high tide as the waves can cause hurdle and accidents.

SUBIC BEACH

Our last stop is the Subic Beach and it takes around 15 minutes from the Calintaan Cave. We have a cottage ready for us. Then, the locals quickly prepare our meal while we take some time to dip in and swim in the water. The sand is pretty pink. The locals cooked our meal pretty well, and we have enjoyed our meal. We took the whole afternoon playing Monopoly Deal cards, and the losers will need to drink a half cup of Tequila Rose as punishment for being a noob!

SMALL TALK CAFE

For our last supper in Bicol, we were supposed to go to Sibid Sibid Restaurant, but they were unfortunately closed, so the tricycle driver drove us to another restaurant, Small Talk Cafe. The food was outstanding. Everything that we ordered was delicious, considering that they were about to close. We ordered Adobong Manok, Bicol Express, Laing, Ox Tail and Beef. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

LEGAZPI TERMINAL

On our last day in Bicol, we decided to go to Legazpi Terminal to buy souvenirs and goodies to bring home to Manila. Legazpi Terminal is said to be the best place to purchase your souvenirs as they offer a lower and reasonable price. You may bargain with the shop keepers easily.

BIGGS DINER

Before heading to the airport, we went to Bigg's Diner in Embarcadero to have our last lunch in Bicol. The food was delicious. It did not taste like fast food at all. We hope that Bigg's Diner will open a few branches in Manila in the future.

Overall, our Bicol trip was memorable for all of us. We get to bond and talk about our childhood memories. Since we started this trip, there will be a next one very soon.
